The short version
Buy Here Pay Here (BHPH) is a type of car financing where the dealership lends you the money to buy the car directly, instead of running your application through a bank. You buy the car at the dealership, and you make your payments at the same dealership. No bank, no finance company, no third-party lender.
The advantage: BHPH dealers can approve people that banks reject. Past credit issues, repossessions, bankruptcies, or thin credit histories don't disqualify you the way they would at a traditional dealer.
The tradeoff: interest rates are usually higher than bank financing, because the dealer is taking on the lending risk themselves. Down payments are typically required, and the amount depends on the dealer and vehicle.
Who BHPH is right for
You're probably a good BHPH candidate if:
- You've been turned down by a bank or franchise dealer recently
- You have steady income but a credit score below 600 (or no credit at all)
- You've had a repo, bankruptcy, or charge-off in the last few years
- You need a reliable car for work but can't wait the 2 to 3 weeks bank financing usually takes
- You have a down payment (at Mountville, at least $1,000) and can afford payments every week or every two weeks matched to your pay schedule
BHPH may not be your cheapest option if:
- You have great credit (700+): you'll likely get cheaper money from a credit union or bank
What to look for in a BHPH dealer
Not all BHPH dealers operate the same way. Here's what separates a good one from a bad one:
- ✓ Honest down-payment number (nothing else due at signing)
- ✓ Vehicles inspected before listing
- ✓ Written warranty, even a short one
- ✓ Real humans you can call after the sale
- ✓ Long history at the same location
- ✓ Clear payment schedule that matches your pay schedule
- ✗ "Guaranteed approval" promises
- ✗ "$0 down" headlines that don't say what gets added to the balance
- ✗ Pressure tactics (today only, last one)
- ✗ Vague total-cost numbers
- ✗ "As-is" sales with no inspection
- ✗ No clear answer about credit-bureau reporting
How Mountville Motors does it
We've been a BHPH dealer in Columbia, Pennsylvania since 2002. Our approach:
- You'll need a down payment, and at least $1,000. It's all you pay to drive away. Tax, tags, title and fees are built into your deal and listed line by line on your contract.
- We look at your income, not your credit score. Documented income, employment and residence stability, a down payment (at least $1,000), and a valid PA driver's license.
- Vehicles mostly 2006 to 2016, all inspected for safety and drivability before they hit the lot.
- 30-day / 1,000-mile warranty on engine, transmission, differential, included free.
- 18-month / 24,000-mile service contract on engine, transmission, transfer case, drive axle, and key electrical components. Optional, and nearly every customer adds it. Its cost is financed, with nothing extra due at signing.
- Three direct lines: Jordan for sales, Katalina for service, Barbara for payments. Real humans.
- Payments every week or every two weeks, matched to your pay schedule. Specific amounts depend on the vehicle and your situation. We walk through the exact drive-away numbers in person.
